Marriage License

All states have different polices and requirements and polices. It is strongly suggested that you call your county and find out the requirements. Here are some guidelines and things to remember when taking care of your marriage license...

Find out where to apply

• Usually it is in the county building.

Ask when to apply

• Usually 2 weeks before and is valid for 30 days.
• The license may not be valid until several days after you have applied for it.

Ask if you need to have a blood test done

• What will be required and how long it will take for the results (consult your doctor)

Bring the correct documents

• birth certificates
• proof of citizenship
• photo identification (driver's license, passport)
• parental consent (if underage)
• death certificate (if widowed)
• divorce decree (if divorced)
• blood test (if needed)

Find out the correct age of consent

It will be beneficial for you to keep all these documents in one central area after you are married. They will be needed for name changes on credit card accounts, social security cards, drivers license, etc.

If you are going to be married in a religious ceremony, you will need religious documents (i.e. catholic religion- the following certificates are needed: baptism, first communion, first penance, and confirmation).
